Termites are one of the most damaging pests to the Australian environment and can cause millions of dollars in property damage. Integrated pest management for termites is a key strategy to understanding and managing the threat posed by these destructive creatures. This approach combines multiple techniques, such as physical barriers, chemical sprays, baiting systems and monitoring, to create an effective defence against termite infestations. Physical barriers involve constructing or installing physical structures that prevent or impede termite entry into buildings. Chemical sprays are applied around the building perimeter and form a barrier that deters termites from entering the area. Baiting systems use wooden stakes placed in the ground near potential infestation areas which attract termites; when they feed on them, they ingest bait containing insecticides which kill them. Monitoring involves regular inspections for signs of active infestations including mud tubes, shed wings and swarming activity. By combining these methods together, it is possible to significantly reduce the threat posed by termites while minimising environmental impact.
